Description
Fresh green mint or Nana mint
These cut green mint leaves are also known as Moroccan mint or Nana mint. The mint leaves have a mild, fresh scent and taste. In combination with green tea and sugar, Nana mint forms the basis for making traditional Moroccan mint tea. Iced tea from Nana mint is also delicious as a refreshing thirst quencher on hot days.
Green mint versus peppermint
Green mint and peppermint are undoubtedly the best-known types of mint. Peppermint is in fact a hybrid species, created by crossing green mint and water mint. Due to a higher menthol content, peppermint has a sharper mint taste than green mint.
Peppermint is often used to add flavor to candy, chewing gum, liqueur, etc. It is also the mint type par excellence for use in desserts, while milder, green mint is the best choice for savory dishes. Both green mint and peppermint are suitable for making mint tea, but Moroccan mint tea is always made with green mint.
Dried mint or fresh mint
Dried mint has a more pronounced flavour than fresh mint. Dried mint is therefore always the best choice in dishes with strong flavours. Dried mint is also the best choice in tea. Water absorbs the flavours of dried mint better than those of fresh mint. Replace 1 tbsp fresh mint with 1 tsp dried mint.
Use as mint tea
Put a teaspoon of dried mint in a cup and pour hot water over it. Let it stand for 10 minutes and filter the mint from the tea. Use the mint pure or mix it with green tea or other herbs.
Mint in savoury dishes
Spearmint is a popular herb in North Africa, the Middle East and Asia. It is used to flavour tabouleh, lamb, yoghurt or beans, for example. In Thai cuisine, mint is added to soups together with red pepper. Spearmint is also delicious in marinades for meat and fish or in dressings over a green salad.
